Running since 1937, Carols by Candlelight has been a Melbourne iconic event. Each year, just prior to Christmas, thousands of people arrive at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl by car, tram or train, and hundreds of thousands more watch the event on television. Armed with their blankets and thermos flasks and, of course, the obligatory candle, the audience sits in one of the 2,000 seats at the front the auditorium or on their blankets on the landscaped lawn surrounding the Bowl.
The audience is entertained by a host of singers, performers, dancers and musicians and they can join in and sing along to a program of well known Christmas Carols. And during the night expect a visit from Santa.
